Starpluse interview

The Vampire Diaries young starlet Candice Accola dishes with Starpulse about her very first television series. Revealing everything from her move to Hollywood at age 16 to the brilliance of the show’s writers, she gives us the inside scoop straight from the down south set in Atlanta. The young actress is set to portray resident mean girl Caroline Truitt on the highly anticipated CW series premiering September 10.

How did you get started in this business? We heard you were a singer. How was the transition into acting?
I moved to La when I was 16 and got record a deal with Maverick records-Warner Brothers. After I recorded the record they opened up the idea of auditioning and working towards getting into film and television as a way to market myself. I met a manager and I met with an agent and the more I started working the more I just really loved the job. So it just grew into its own thing and I never stopped and I love it more and more.

Are there plans to try to incorporate acting and singing as you move through this career?
I love making music. I don’t want to necessarily become a performer and have Caroline be a singer on the show or anything. I definitely want to keep this separate. Music is more of my own thing in my own time. Right now I am really excited to be part of a series.

On the show you play the character Caroline. We’ve heard she isn’t the nicest girl. Any mean girl high school personal experience to draw from?
Kevin Williamson (Hidden Palms, Dawson’s Creek) and Julie Fleck, the writers of the show, did a really great job of giving everyone a character that has many layers. No, Caroline is not the nicest girl, but I think she is misunderstood. I had that experience in my school where there were always girls that weren’t nice but there is a reason behind everything. I understood they weren’t just being mean to be mean but they had other deeper issues that effected how they dealt with other people.

“Vampire Diaries” has been portrayed very dark and romantic, but with a writer like Kevin Williamson there must be some great comedic moments. Does that affect your character?
There are a lot of one liner-little nothings that happen that just fall out of Caroline’s mouth. She doesn’t think before she speaks so that brings a natural comedic quality to her character.

Did you read the books in preparation for the series?
At first I wanted to read the books, but after talking to the producers and the writers they are not sticking to it so much. We were kind of advised not to. I also didn’t want to have a pre-conceived notion of who Caroline was when they were going to possibly write her in a different light. I opted not to read the books so I could find out who Caroline was on my own.

What was it like working with the others actors especially series vets like Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev?
The whole cast-crew included get along great. Nina actually needed a place to stay after the pilot came out and she moved in with me so obviously we get along really well! The whole cast is getting together for barbeques at least once a week. Here in Atlanta my aunt and uncle have a lake house, and we have all gotten together there and gone tubing every weekend, even the producers! It is kind of disgusting how much we get along.

Does what happens off set effect you on the set?
(It) makes the process a little easier. There's that comfort to play around with the scenes. You can go there without feeling like the other person is going to judge you.

You are filming in Atlanta. What are the advantages/disadvantages of working there?
It's great to be back in the south, I am from Florida. Being in Atlanta has been really wonderful. Not only because it sets a different tone but no one really knows you. They aren't really pushing the marketing out here as much so it keeps us really humble.

Is there anything we are going to see in the show that is unexpected based on the media that has been released?
Yes 100%. I can tell you from a cast perspective that every time we open a script you hear gasps. We are shocked at everything that is coming up. The pilot is a beautiful introduction to the show. By episode two hold onto your britches!

With the success of "Twilight," "True Blood," and even "Buffy The Vampire Slayer's" continued cult following, are you a big fan of this vampire phenomenon?
It is exciting to be part of this new wave of pop culture. I am a hug fan of the series "True Blood" - all of the cast is. A lot of the directors we are working with coming up in the next couple of shows have shot episodes of "True Blood" - exciting. It's also incredible what "Twlight" has become.

As a new emerging actress who is doing the type of work would you like to be doing in the next 5 to 10 years?
I love Amy Adams. She is wonderful. Evan Rachel Wood is a blast. I am also really excited about Ari Graynor from "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" and "American Crime." I think it is an exciting time for young women in this industry. I am excited to make my own path.

What is up next for you?
I'm looking forward to new opportunities in the future. It is my first time on a series so I am focusing 100%.

Any plans on how you are going to watch the premiere?
We have all watched it a zillion times at this point. We are all just gonna get together and pop a bottle of champagne!

Question

If you could bring any dead character back to life, who would it be?

Kayla Ewell (Vicki Donovan) has become one of my best friends, so to have her in Atlanta with me would be really cool.

Who would you prefer to date: a werewolf or a vamp?

This has nothing to do with who Caroline should date, but if I had to honestly answer that question, it would probably be a werewolf because I’d rather deal with just one night of the month than every single day of high-strung, potential death. You could deal with, like, one day a month he’s going to be an asshole. I think that’s doable.

What’s the last book you read?

I’ve been reading a lot of plays, but I’m halfway through The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.
Do you like chicken and waffles?

I’ve never had chicken and waffles! I know it’s crazy I haven’t been to Gladys Knight [and Ron Winan's Chicken and Waffles in Atlanta] or Rosco’s in L.A. I like chicken, and I like waffles, so I think marrying the two would be a good idea.

Do you miss singing?

I sing so much in my daily life, whether it’s in the shower or in my living room playing terrible guitar. So, I feel like I get enough music in my life and eventually I’ll start bringing it out more. But I sing constantly.
Do you have plans for your birthday next month?

I’ll be back in Los Angeles. A friend of mine has a clothing line called Show Me Your Mumu, and so we found a print and we’re going to sell it on her website. All the profits go to Turn the Corner, which is a foundation that focuses on Lyme disease research and prevention. So, that’s what I’m doing for my birthday.

Candice on playing Caroline Forbes...

“What I love about Caroline’s arc this season is that she’s just gained so much perspective, which in turn has made her grow up so much,” Accola says. “Whereas before, throughout Season 1, I feel like Caroline would hold a grudge, [now she knows] she’s not perfect either. On her first night as a vampire she took advantage of a nurse and killed an innocent man. She’s killed and she’s asked to be forgiven, so she has it in her.”

A day at the beach...

Savvy Magazine - Issue 11

Before landing the role of Caroline Forbes on CW's hit show The Vampire Diaries, Candice Accola cut her performing chops as a singer, inking a record contract at 16 and touring with a young Miley Cyrus. Savvy Magazine asked the rocker- turned actress to show us how to take a pretty dress and amp it up with the season's edgiest accessories. "When it comes to dressing up, I love to mix and match all kinds of stuff," she says.

Nylon

MF Magazine - Winter Issue

Candice Accola would like to suck you blood… Well, not really… but Caroline Forbes, the character she plays on the Vampire Diaries has been known to bite a few necks. Candice moved to LA from Florida to start a music career and was swept away by the acting world. Candice’s passion for music remains, but she has devoted herself professionally to acting. She landed the role of Caroline on the successful show the Vampire Diaries. Caroline is the blonde vampire, who is also known on the show as vampire Barbie. Don’t let the blonde hair fool you; despite her poised appearance, sweet smile, and blonde locks, Caroline is a lethal vampire who might just kill you!

How did you get started in acting?

I initially moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. Six months after the big move I got signed to a major label, and it was there that I was encouraged to audition. I booked my first job at the age of 18, an independent called On the Doll, and I was hooked. That’s when I began acting. I started to take classes and learn more about the film and television business and I just fell in love. I love music for my soul and need it as a constant in my life. But music wasn’t fun for me anymore when it turned into a job. I love my job as an actor. I’m excited by the film and television business, as opposed to feeling constricted or compromised because of the business aspect, as I did in music. It’s the business of endless opportunities.

What is it like acting in a series? How far in advance do you know what is going to happen on the show?

I love going to work; I love acting on a series. For me it’s been such a wonderful playground in which to learn and grow as an actor. I’ll be the first to say I needed this time as an actor. It’s been wonderful playing a character that doesn’t stop growing. We’re also very lucky to be surrounded with such an amazing crew; I find myself hanging out longer at work that I need to. We aren’t very far behind what the audience is watching on television because the storyline is constantly changing. We know what is going to happen when we read the scripts and we know that’s exactly how it’s going to happen when we tape.

What’s it like working with the other cast members of the Vampire Diaries? Are all of you pretty close?

Going to work is my favorite thing to do right now. A big part of that lies with being around people I get to work with. I find myself constantly learning from all of them. It’s also a great group to giggle with.

The Vampire Diaries - Season Two

The House Guest

The Vampire Diaries - Season Two

Elena finds out that Katherine is free from the tomb and is upset about this. Damon asks Katherine if she knew that killing Elijah with the dagger would also kill him; and Katherine says she knew about it, but wanted her freedom more. Stefan and Bonnie try to persuade Jonas and Luka to work with them; however Jonas has a different idea. He wants Elijah alive again. He performs a ritual with Luka, which puts Luka in the boardinghouse in invisible form (his true body remains with his father). Jonas asks him to remove the dagger from Elijah's body. When Luka tries to do that, Katherine shows up and stops him. Jonas then orders Luka to kill her; a confused Katherine then gets staked, but not in the heart, and she screams for Damon. Damon runs to Katherine to pull out the stake, and not knowing about the presence of Luka, uses a flamethrower to prevent the removal of the dagger. This results in Luka's body getting fatally burned back in Jonas' house and he dies. Stefan realizes it was an act of Jonas and goes to his house to make peace, but an angry Jonas blames Stefan and Damon for his dead son and wants revenge. He disables Stefan and tells him that "he's about to find out exactly what loneliness feels like", and leaves the house to kill Elena. Katherine tells Damon how she made a deal with John Gilbert so that Damon would die instead of Stefan. In the grill, Caroline sings a song for Matt to get his attention; he is flattered by her act and kisses her. Bonnie tells Elena about her relationship with Jeremy and is surprised by her positive response. Jonas shows up at the grill and brings on a massacre by exploding all the lights and setting a fire. Bonnie tries to stop him, but he disables her; Matt tries to help Bonnie and then Caroline, but Jonas stabs him in the neck with a broken bottle. Caroline sees Matt dying and forces him to drink her blood to save his life. Stefan and Elena come to her house where Bonnie and Jeremy are. Elena goes upstairs to the bathroom where Jonas attacks her, but it is actually Katherine and she bites him; it was part of a plan to save Elena. Bonnie tells the others that it wasn't necessary to kill him. She then reaches out to close his eyes, but Jonas seemingly attacks her, which results in Stefan breaking his neck in defense. Alaric tells Jenna that he loves her, and that there are things about the death of Isobel that aren't his to tell. Jeremy tries to comfort Bonnie because she lost her last chance to get her powers back, but Bonnie tells him that Jonas didn't attack her; he returned her powers and told her how to kill Klaus. Katherine asks Damon where the site of the "witch massacre" is, but he refuses to tell her anything since he still doesn't believe that she wants to help them. Matt awakes and remembers what happened, and Caroline tells him that she's a vampire. Matt panics and accuses her for the death of Vicki and runs away from Caroline. In the end, Isobel shows up at Elena's house and tells Jenna that she is Elena's mother.

The Dinner Party

The Vampire Diaries - Season Two

The episode begins with Elena reading one of Jonathan Gilbert's journals. Jonathan recounts a night Stefan attacked him (Jonathan wore a ring to protect himself) and killed two of the Fells. After that Stefan tells her the whole story himself. When he first turned, he was brutal and inhuman until Lexi showed him the path of love and humanity after which he fought for his life. Stefan asks Elena the same, to fight for her life and not to give up. Damon invites Elijah over to the boardinghouse for a dinner party with the intent of killing him. Elijah warns Damon that if he has any "dishonarable intentions", he will kill him and everyone in the house. Jonathan Gilbert's journal reveals that if a vampire uses the dagger to kill an Original, both will die; it becomes clear that John helped Damon with the dagger so that he could also die with Elijah. Stefan calls to warn Damon and Alaric answers the phone. Alaric then writes on paper to Damon that the dagger will kill him if he uses it. While Elijah is seated at the dinner table, Alaric sneaks up behind him and stabs him with the dagger, killing him. They then drag his body to the basement, but later find that he is gone; Elena had read in the journal that the dagger must not be removed or the Original will come back to life. Elijah goes to Jonas and asks him to find Elena at the moment. Jonas seems to realize the witchcraft of Bonnie on his son, he goes to Elena's house where Jeremy was helping Bonnie to enhance her channeling ability. In anger, he takes away her powers and threatens her that "she'll answer to him if any harm comes to his son". John blackmails Alaric into giving him his ring back once Jenna starts asking Alaric questions about Isobel. Elijah shows up at the lake house telling Elena that the deal is off, and even though he has not been invited in, he's very patient and will wait them out. Elena tells Elijah that if they don't renegotiate, she'll stab herself with a knife, have Stefan give her his blood, and then kill herself like Katherine did, becoming a vampire and of no use to him. Elijah calls her out on a bluff, but Elena stabs herself, meaning she wasn't. Elijah gives his word to Elena and begs her to let him heal her. She staggers into Elijah's arms and stabs him with the dagger, killing him again. Damon moves from behind the wall and Stefan quickly rushes to Elena's aid. Elijah's body is dragged down to the basement like before. Elena tells both Damon and Stefan that she'll fight, but they need to start doing things her way to which they agree. Damon comes back to find Katherine in his shower. Elijah's compulsion on her has worn off with his death, and she says she's going to stay to help them.

Crying Wolf

The Vampire Diaries - Season Two

Stefan and Elena decide to spend a weekend at the old Gilbert family lakehouse, unaware that they've been followed by Tyler and Brady. Jenna starts to worry that Alaric isn't being honest about his past with her. Jules and Brady explain the significance of the sun and moon curse to Tyler but fail to tell him about the sacrificial role of Elena in it and lure him into helping them if he wants to stop transforming. Damon meets Elijah at the Historical Society Tea Party in order to resolve some questions about the original vampires and a sacrifice of the doppelgänger, but Elijah stabs him in the neck with a wooden pencil and tells him once he is of no use to him, he will kill him. Bonnie seeks the help of Caroline and Jeremy to perform a hypnosis spell on Luka in order to get information about the Originals and him and his father's relationship with Elijah. Luka reveals Elijah plans to kill Klaus by making him vulnerable after sacrificing Elena. He also reveals that Klaus has his sister and they want him dead, which is why they are working for Elijah. Jules with the help of her other werewolf friends torture Damon at his house for information about the moonstone, but Elijah intervenes, killing all the werewolves while Jules escapes in the confrontation. Brady, with the help of Tyler, finds Stefan and shoots him with a wooden bullet. Brady leaves Stefan with Tyler as he goes to find Elena. Stefan then tells Tyler he doesn't want to break the curse because Elena would have to die. Tyler has a change of heart and frees Stefan, who kills Brady in order to save Elena. Meanwhile, Jeremy and Bonnie confess their feelings for the other, and share a kiss. Stefan figures out that Elena knew about Elijah's real plan for her, telling her she's being a martyr and not heroic. Tyler, before leaving town with Jules, meets Matt and tells him that he has feelings for Caroline but he knows that Caroline loves him. He tells Matt to take care of her. The episode ends with Jules and Tyler leaving town.

Daddy Issues

The Vampire Diaries - Season Two

Tyler questions Caroline about Mason's death and is infuriated that she kept Mason's death a secret from him. Jenna becomes upset over the revelation that John is Elena's biological father. Jules meets her wolf-lover Brady in the woods and tells him she wants to take Tyler with them and leave town. Caroline asks Stefan to try and reason with Tyler, while Jules takes Caroline hostage. Jules calls Stefan and tells him to bring Tyler to her in exchange for Caroline. Stefan calls Elena to inform Damon of the situation and tells John to make sure Elena doesn't get involved. Damon and Stefan both approach Jules with Tyler. Stefan tries to make peace, but when that fails Damon offers his "bloodier" method. Jules then calls on her wolf friends and although Damon and Stefan are outnumbered, they still manage to kill most of the wolves. Tyler hesitantly releases Caroline from the cage, but watches as Jules has Caroline at gunpoint. As Stefan and Damon are about to get staked, Jonas, on Elijah's behalf, shows up and incapacitates Jules and Brady and gives Tyler a message: "Tell your friends to get the hell out of this town." Tyler tries to apologize to Caroline, but she furiously declines and tells him they are no longer friends. Tyler goes back to Jules and Brady and informs them that Mason was probably killed because he found the moonstone. Brady asks Tyler the location of the moonstone, and tells him he has no idea. Damon tries to see why John Gilbert has returned and John tells him he is here to protect Elena. John reveals to Damon that the only way to kill an Original is with a dagger dipped in white ash wood that dates back to the beginning of the Originals. It is shown at the end that John is still working with Katherine and trying to get her out of the tomb.

The Descent

The Vampire Diaries - Season Two

Stefan has his own ideas about Elena’s new plan for the future. He tries to contact Isobel and gets in touch with Jonathan Gilbert who comes home in the end. While Damon tries to get the truth of how to cure a wolf bite out of Jules, he asks Elena to keep an eye on Rose, a situation that turns unexpectedly dangerous, almost fatal to Elena when Rose mistakes her for Katherine. Although Rose struggles to cope, she wishes she were back home with her friends and family, "being" human again. Caroline and Matt try to be honest about their feelings for one another. They both confess their love for the other. Tyler’s reaction to Caroline's generosity comes as a surprise to her. Meanwhile, Rose escapes from the Salvatore house and kills three people before Damon and Elena are able to find her. Damon carries Rose back to his room where she gets worse and is in more pain. Rose tells Elena that Damon wants to care, but when he does he runs away from it. Damon intervenes in Rose's dream placing her back in her homeland as a human. In Rose's dream, she reminds Damon that he built a life for himself while she spent the last 500 years just existing. Rose asks Damon if she'll see her family again and he says he thinks she'll see whoever she wants to see. Rose says that would be nice and maybe she'll see Trevor, too. She tells Damon she's not afraid anymore. Hearing that she is not afraid anymore, Damon prepares to stake her. As Rose counts down to a race, Damon, while crying, stakes her, giving her a peaceful death. Damon admits to Elena that he knows she is his friend and that he does feel because he was supposed to have died. Elena realizes he feels guilty, but Damon says that would be human of him, and he's not. He tells her to go home, but before she does she hugs him as he struggles not to cry. He confesses to a stranger on the road named Jessica, who is compelled "not to move", that his big secret is that he misses being human. He struggles with the dilemma of whether to bite her or not. He lets her go, but bites her soon after. Tyler meets Jules at the Grill, where she informs him that she knows he and Mason are werewolves; Mason is dead and that Caroline and her vampire friends were behind it. Tyler disagrees and she tells him there are more werewolves out there and they're on their way.

By the Light of the Moon

The Vampire Diaries - Season Two

As the full moon approaches, Caroline helps Tyler prepare for his painful transformation; she stays with him until forced to leave when he tries to attack her. In the tomb, Katherine taunts Stefan over his insecurities about Elena. In response to Katherine's insistence of her love for him, Stefan asks her to prove that there is some good in her, and she grudgingly advises him to ask Isobel, Elena's mother, for help in finding Klaus. Bonnie later seeks Luca's help to destroy the moonstone; they cast a spell that appears to work, but it is revealed that Luca tricked Bonnie when he hands the moonstone, still intact, over to his father on Elijah's orders. Jules, a friend of Mason's, arrives in Mystic Falls looking for him after Tyler leaves a message on Mason's voicemail. A suspicious Damon and Alaric try to trick her into having a drink mixed with wolfsbane; she is provoked into revealing she is a werewolf, and threateningly tells Damon he has been marked. Elijah, who reveals that he no longer works for Klaus, arrives at the house and makes a deal with Elena: she has to keep herself safe from Klaus (so that Elijah can eventually use her as bait to kill Klaus) and in return, Elijah will protect her friends and family and free Stefan from the tomb. As Stefan exits the tomb with Elijah, Katherine begs him not to leave her there, but he walks away and is happily reunited with Elena. Caroline reunites with Tyler, holding him as he cries about the trauma of the night before. He never got out of the enclosure. Damon and Rose talk at the Salvatore mansion; Jules, in wolf form, attacks them and bites Rose's shoulder. Though the wound appears to heal at first, Rose's shoulder becomes infected - a werewolf bite is fatal to a vampire.

The Sacrifice

The Vampire Diaries - Season Two

Stefan and Damon plot to get the moonstone from Katherine so they can lift the curse. Elena asks Rose to take her to Slater so they can learn more about Klaus and where to find him. Instead, they find Slater's staked corpse in his house. Elena uses information from his computer to get Klaus's attention, saying that she, the doppleganger, is willing to surrender. Rose protests, but Elena insists that surrendering is the only way to protect the people she loves from Klaus. Meanwhile, Caroline and Tyler discuss the approaching full moon and explore the underground tomb on the old Lockwood family property. They discover Mason's journal and the video diary that he had used to document his extremely painful transformations. Bonnie forms a plan to lift the spell from the tomb and temporarily incapacitate Katherine so that Stefan can quickly grab the moonstone, but Jeremy goes ahead with the plan by himself and is captured and fed on by Katherine. He manages to toss the moonstone out of the tomb. Stefan arrives and pushes Jeremy out safely, but is trapped in it himself. Later, Jeremy and Bonnie almost kiss. Damon arrives at Slater's house and tells Elena that he will not let her surrender to Klaus or put herself in danger. Three unnamed vampires confront Damon, Rose, and Elena. Elijah shows up killing one and Rose flees. The remaining two vampires want to take Elena to Klaus, but Elijah kills them too and leaves Damon and Elena unharmed. They return to Mystic Falls; Elena tries to run to Stefan in the tomb, but Damon restrains her. Stefan makes Damon promise to protect Elena, and he agrees. Elijah and Luca's father discuss what had happened at Slater's house. Elijah states that he spared Damon because he could see that both Damon and Stefan would protect Elena, which is what Elijah has been trying to do.

Katrina

The Vampire Diaries - Season Two

The episode begins in Bulgaria in 1490 and shows Katherine, surrounded by her family, giving birth to a baby girl. She asks to hold the baby but her father says that Katherine has shamed their family enough and takes the baby away, leaving Katherine sobbing. Present day, Elena goes to the tomb, where she offers Katherine a bottle of blood in exchange for the truth - a dopplegänger from the Petrova line can be used to break the curse. Elena, as Katherine's descendant, is the current Petrova dopplegänger. Katherine reveals that she was kicked out of Bulgaria and fled to England; she assimilated into English society, where Elijah and Trevor found her. They recognized her as a Petrova dopplegänger and Elijah tried to kill her, but Trevor - who had fallen in love with her - helped her escape. She became a vampire so that she couldn't be used to break the curse. Katherine came back to Mystic Falls to offer Klaus what he needed to break the curse: the current dopplegänger (Elena), a witch (Bonnie), a werewolf (first Mason, then Tyler), a vampire (Caroline), and the moonstone. She hoped that in exchange, Klaus would spare her life. Meanwhile Bonnie meets a warlock named Luca and his father, and Jeremy is jealous of Bonnie's attraction to Luca. Damon and Rose go to get more information about Klaus from Rose's vampire friend, Slater, but they are overheard by a fully healed Elijah. Damon and Rose sleep together, and at the end of the episode Elijah compels Slater to stake himself. It is revealed that Luca and his father are working for Elijah.

Rose

The Vampire Diaries - Season Two

Jeremy realizes Elena didn't come home the previous night and informs Stefan. Elena, still weak from her injuries, is taken to a large, abandoned house by her captor, a vampire named Trevor, and meets another vampire named Rose. At school, Tyler deals with the aftermath of Sara's death. He attempts to get Caroline to tell him what she knows about his abilities, and she eventually reveals that she is a vampire, but doesn't tell him about Stefan and Damon and swears Tyler to secrecy. Elena overhears Rose and Trevor arguing about a vampire named Elijah and whether or not to go through with a plan. Using Jeremy's blood and a spell, Bonnie locates Elena, 300 miles away. Stefan and Damon set off to find her. At the house, Elena tries to get information out of Rose, who tells her Elijah is one of 'the original' vampires, and that she and Trevor are using Elena, a Petrova doppelganger and the key to breaking the curse, as a bargaining position. Trevor reveals that he is the one who helped Katherine escape the originals, and he and Rose have been running from the originals ever since. Elijah arrives, and Rose offers him Elena in exchange for their pardon. Elijah agrees, but kills Trevor, to Rose's grief. Elena tries to stall Elijah, saying she knows where the moonstone is, but he rips off her vervain necklace and compels her to tell him its and Katherine's location. Stefan and Damon arrive, fight with Elijah and stake him. Rose finds Stefan and tells him the originals will come for Elena, that they are doing it for Klaus. Elena returns home and is reunited with Bonnie and Jeremy. Later, Damon comes to her room with her vervain necklace. Before he gives it back, he tells Elena he loves her and that he doesn't deserve her, but Stefan does. He compels Elena to forget what he said and leaves. Back in the abandoned house, Elijah slowly pulls the wooden stake out of his chest.

Masquarade

The Vampire Diaries - Season Two

Stefan, Damon, Bonnie, Jeremy, Alaric, and Caroline team up and form a plan to kill Katherine at the masquerade ball. Jenna returns home from the hospital, and Alaric agrees to keep an eye on Elena while the others carry out their plan. Katherine is visited by a witch named Lucy, who is to help her retrieve the moonstone from Stefan and Damon. At the ball, Katherine pretends to be Elena and threatens to kill partygoers if she doesn't get the moonstone. Bonnie intuitively realizes that Lucy is a witch. Matt, Tyler, and a girl named Sara are drinking and partying in a room at the ball when Matt - under Katherine's compulsion - begins taunting Tyler about his father and tries to fight him. Caroline hears them and breaks up the fight, but Sara - who is also being compelled - stabs Tyler with a knife, and he accidentally slams her into a desk, breaking her neck. While Caroline checks on Sara pols, Tylers eyes turn yellow, showing that the curse has been triggered. Stefan and Damon trap Katherine in a room that Bonnie has spelled to prevent Katherine from leaving it. Meanwhile, Elena becomes suspicious and goes to the ball to investigate. Jeremy and Bonnie tell her what's going on. Stefan and Damon try to kill Katherine, staking her several times, but stop when Jeremy comes running and tells them that every time they stake her, Elena is severely wounded too. Katherine reveals that she had Lucy put a spell on her and Elena, linking them together. Bonnie confronts Lucy and demands that she lift the Katherine/Elena spell. Lucy, who reveals herself to be Bonnie's cousin, lifts the spell and incapacitates Katherine, who collapses. Elena recovers from her wounds but refuses to get back with Stefan, saying she wants to feel that she and her family are safe first. Damon traps Katherine in the underground tomb. Before he seals the tomb, she pleads with him, saying that Elena is in danger, but he walks away. As Elena heads home, she is intercepted by a masked stranger, who grabs her and covers her mouth while she screams.

Plan B

The Vampire Diaries - Season Two

Elena and Stefan wake up together in her bed and frolic around, while the camera splits between them and Katherine and Mason, who are also making out in a bed elsewhere. Jeremy goes to see Damon and offers to help get rid of Katherine. Preparations are underway for the masquerade ball at the Lockwood mansion and Damon and Stefan ask Bonnie to help them apprehend Mason. Caroline tries to bond with her mother; though Liz comes to accept Caroline and swears that she'll keep her secret, Caroline compels her mother to forget that she is a vampire. Bonnie has a vision of the moonstone's location; it is seen that the moonstone has been hidden in a well by Mason. Stefan searches for it but quickly discovers the well is full of vervain; as the vervain burns him, he screams for help. Damon tells Katherine of Mason's death, saying that Mason had loved her but apparently had not trusted her with the moonstone, since he had hidden it in the well with vervain. Elena, shaken by Jenna's injury and fearful of what Katherine might do to her family, decides to break up with Stefan for good. Needing another werewolf, Katherine compels Matt to attack Tyler, so that Tyler will kill Matt and become a werewolf.

Both Stefan and Damon try to find out what Katherine wants, why she's back, and how much of a threat she is to the people they love. Tyler is surprised when his uncle, Mason Lockwood, arrives in town to console him. Katherine and Damon nearly sleep together, but Katherine tells Damon that she never loved him and that she had always loved Stefan. Distraught, Damon goes to see Elena, who resists his attempt to kiss her. Angry that Elena also loves Stefan, Damon snaps Jeremy's neck to get back at her. Jeremy survives because he is wearing John's ring, which protects him from death from supernatural forces. Katherine later goes to the hospital to see Caroline, who mistakes her for Elena, and uses a pillow to smother Caroline. Before Caroline dies, Katherine introduces herself and tells Caroline to deliver a message to the Salvatore brothers - "Game on".

Season Two

The Vampire Diaries

The second season mainly focuses on the arrival of Elena's doppelganger Katherine Pierce and the reasons she returned to Mystic Falls. The second season also introduces werewolves. Tyler's Uncle, Mason Lockwood, reveals as a werewolf, arrives in the town after the death of his brother, Tyler's father, and tells Tyler about the so called "Lockwood curse" that has run in their family for centuries. He tells Tyler that in order to activate the curse, more specifically to activate the "werewolf" gene, the person must kill someone. Katherine turns Caroline into a vampire, after Caroline ingested Damon's blood to heal from the accident, so she can have a spy against Stefan and Elena, using Matt to scare Caroline into helping her. Tyler accidentally kills an innocent girl after Katherine compelled her to provoke him. Katherine's main reason for returning to Mystic Falls was to find the moonstone, with the help of Mason, who is later killed by Damon. Katherine falls back on Plan B and calls in a favor from a witch named Lucy to help her get the stone back from Stefan and Damon. Lucy casts a spell on Elena and Katherine, meaning that when Katherine is hurt, it also affects Elena. When Lucy finds out another Bennett is at the party and Katherine had deceived her, she puts a spell on the moonstone, injuring Katherine. Damon then leaves her in the original tomb, where he believes she belongs. She tells him the reason she hasn't killed Elena is because she is in danger and needs protection. Damon ignores her and leaves her in the tomb, thinking she's lying. Elena is later kidnapped, showing that Katherine had been telling the truth. Elena is held hostage by two 500-year-old vampires, Rose and Trevor, who have been on the run from the Originals-the first generation of vampires. Rose reveals to Elena that she is the Petrova doppelganger and needs to be sacrificed to break the sun and the moon curse. Katherine was also a Petrova doppelganger who used Trevor to help her escape from the Originals and Rose to turn her into a vampire to save herself. Elena is rescued by Stefan and Damon before Elijah, an Original, can take her away. Klaus, the oldest vampire in history, is now hunting for Elena. Klaus wants to break the curse before the werewolves can. Elijah has made a deal with Elena to continue living her life instead of trying to hand herself over to Klaus. That way, he will protect her loved ones because he wants to use Elena as bait so he can lure out Klaus and kill him. Elena agrees to do so, and gives Elijah one more condition: he must free Stefan from the tomb, and Elijah accepts. Jules, a friend of Mason, comes into town informing the Lockwoods he never came back to Florida and reports him as a missing person. Alaric is suspicious and calls Damon to the Grill. They try various methods to trick Jules into revealing if she is a werewolf or not, but Jules eventually reveals that she is indeed a werewolf, and could "sniff out" that Damon is a vampire and the wolfsbane Alaric put in her drink the whole time. Damon tells Jules she won't find Mason and to leave town. She tells Damon it's stupid of him to threaten her during a full moon and that he's been "marked." Later, Jules breaks into the Salvatore mansion in wolf form and attacks Damon, but Rose pushes him out of the way, getting bitten instead. As Rose succumbs to the effects of her wolf bite, Damon stakes her into a peaceful death, as Jules says a stake to the heart is the only cure. Uncle John's return to Mystic Falls comes as an unpleasant surprise to Elena, Damon, Jenna, and Alaric. John reveals to Damon that the only way to kill an Original is with a dagger dipped in white ash wood, which dates back to the Original's beginning. John is still working with Katherine and has a plan to get her out of the tomb. After being put under a hypnosis spell by Bonnie, Luka reveals that he and his dad are working for Elijah because Klaus has his sister and they want him dead as well. Luka says that Klaus will be weakened by the sacrificial ritual, meaning Elena has to die so Elijah can kill him and set his sister free. Stefan figures out that Elena knew about Elijah's plans for her, telling her she's being a martyr and not heroic. John gives Damon the dagger with the ash from the white oak so he can kill Elijah. Elena finds more of John Gilbert's journals and finds out that if a vampire uses the dagger, he will die as well. Stefan warns Damon in time and Alaric uses the dagger to stab Elijah, but he pulls the dagger back out, which means Elijah isn't really dead. He shows up at the cabin Elena and Stefan are staying at and tells Elena their deal is off. Elena threatens to turn herself into a vampire if Elijah doesn't honor their deal, but he doesn't believe her. She stabs herself in the stomach and Elijah panics and agrees to protect her friends and family and begs her to let him heal her. When she comes forward so he can give her some of his blood, she stabs him with the dagger and leaves it in him. Elijah's death means Katherine is no longer compelled to stay in the tomb and she returns to Damon and Stefan's house where she says she'll stay and help them take down Klaus.

(It is strongly implied that both Tyler and his father are werewolves.) John kills Anna and burns many of the tomb vampires alive in the basement of an old building. Tyler's father dies along with them. Stefan realizes that, despite everything Damon has done, he does love his brother. Elena confronts John with the knowledge that he is her father, Stefan having informed her so. Jeremy learns of Anna's death; he drinks Anna's blood and overdoses on pain pills, hoping that his emotional pain will ease if he becomes a vampire. Damon kisses a person whom he believes to be Elena, who is then invited into Elena's house by Jenna and stabs John Gilbert, who recognizes her as Katherine, pretending to be Elena. The season ends with the real Elena entering the house and going toward the kitchen, where Katherine is...

Isobel

The Vampire Diaries - Season One

Isobel returns to town and surprises Alaric with her new cynical and cruel attitude and her demand that he arrange for her to meet Elena; despite her seeming indifference toward him, it appears that she still loves him and that she is not truly happy with her life as a vampire. When Elena and Isobel finally meet, Isobel refuses to answer most of Elena's questions, but states that she is also looking for the mysterious invention that John Gilbert has been seeking. Upon learning that Damon has the device, Isobel orders Elena to obtain the device from Damon and threatens to kill everyone Elena knows if she refuses. It soon becomes apparent that both Isobel and John are working for Katherine. Isobel attempts to intimidate Damon into giving her the device and offers to reveal Katherine's whereabouts in return, but he makes it clear that he will not tolerate her threatening him or the people he cares about, and that he no longer wants anything to do with Katherine. Isobel later kidnaps Jeremy in order to force Elena's hand, and Elena implores Damon to give her the device, which he does. Bonnie offers to remove the spell from the device, which can supposedly kill vampires; it is later revealed that Bonnie only pretended to deactivate the device, due to her vendetta against all vampires. Elena gives the device to Isobel, who reveals that she knew Damon would surrender the device to Elena because he's in love with her. It is revealed that John is Elena's biological father, and that he and Isobel had dated in high school. John plans to use the device to kill all the vampires in Mystic Falls, including Stefan and Damon. Before leaving town, Isobel, who appears to care for Elena after all, expresses her fear that the Salvatore brothers may eventually turn Elena into a vampire - a life that she doesn't want for Elena - and that getting rid of them is the best thing she and John could do for their daughter. Anna appears and tells Jeremy that her mother was killed, and that she knows she should not be there, but she has nowhere else to go. Jeremy hugs her and attempts to comfort her.
